The Celluloid label release Fado pairs European folksinger Amália Rodrigues with expatriate American tenor saxophonist Don Byas, who spent his later years living in the Netherlands and performed and recorded across Europe. The album derives its title from Rodrigues' native Portugal's word for "fate," which also serves as the name of the country's representative, mournful folk music. The settings provide ample opportunity for Byas' expressiveness and Rodrigues' vocals are intense; despite the language barrier, the sadness and resignation of the music come through with every note.
