AllMusic Review by Nitsuh Abebe

Given the exceptional quality of the Spatula releases which followed Even the Thorny Acacia, it's probably best to consider the record as a demonstration of great potential -- its songs are perfectly lovely, and the rambling, uneven guitar constructions that would mark later releases are present and developed -- but it's albums like Medium Planers and Matchers and Despina by Land on which the band shed some of indie rock's conventions and defined their true sound. This might leave Even the Thorny Acacia on the less necessary end of Spatula's catalog, but the album is still heads above your average rock record.
