The mysterious audiovisual project CUTS explores dark, rich musical territory on EP1, their debut for Invada Records. Tracks such as "Cuts 01" have a glowering density: Percussion rattles distantly underneath claustrophobic guitars and synths, while Jo Spratley's aloof vocals add to the ominous feel. Here and on "Cuts 03," Spratley adds a welcome human touch, but throughout the EP, CUTS' carefully layered sound design and the uneasy mood make it clear why they're on Invada. EP1 mixes elements of shoegaze, industrial, soundtracks, and post-rock without claiming allegiance to any style in particular, and the ambiguity makes their music all the more intriguing.
