This set compiles a selection of electronic music created by computerized/electronic systems working in tandem with "organic" sources (live musicians, pre-existing recorded dialogue, etc.). Insook Choi's 'The Frog in a Machine' is a dark, cavernous journey to the heart of The Machine. Jean-Claude Risset's 'Saxtractor' is a piece for solo saxophone and taped sounds - its probing, free-form yet lyrical qualities recall the jazz avant-garde of the 1970s (especially the work of Stockhausen-inspired Anthony Braxton in his collaborations with Richard Teitelbaum). Jerry Tabor's 'Engaging Causey' is a disorienting yet strangely enchanting collage of sounds, seemingly "improvised" by computer. This is not "easy listening," but those interested in the vast possibilities of electronically generated sound will be fascinated.
