Crafting the same kind of Cuban jazz that the Buena Vista Social Club project brought back into the mainstream, Max Gonzalez performs these 17 tracks with the enthusiasm of a teenager. After a five-year retirement and years spent in other people's bands, his passion and excitement for the material is highly infectious. Those who were enamored with the Buena Vista projects should give this a listen; Gonzalez may be slightly more pop-oriented, but he is no less passionate and fun. His voice still sounds great despite his advancing age, and the backing band is right there with him. The liner notes are written in both Spanish and English, although the English translation is rather sloppy and leaves out large chunks of information. But otherwise this is a very enjoyable album that should appeal to Cuban jazz fans.
