AllMusic Review by Andy Hinds

1988 Midnight Music act Essence can only be classified as a Cure rip-off band. Everything the band does is directly patterned after its heroes, from lead singer Hans' vocals -- which expertly reproduce each and every warble, hiccup, and quaver of Robert Smith's distinctive wail -- to the songs themselves, of which nearly each can be traced back to an obvious Cure antecedent. They even have song titles like "Between Yesterday and Today," "Like Christ," and "The Cat." This slavish type of imitation may strike you as funny or unforgivable, depending on your constitution.
