Early Start Review

by Scott Yanow

Although not too well-known away from the West Coast, Mark Masters' Jazz Composers Orchestra has often displayed its ability to interpret complex music. On their album, the 19-piece big band performs arrangements by Bill Holman ("Out of Nowhere" and "Film at Eleven"), Hank Levy, Dee Barton, Ken Hanna and Don Piestrup. Other than, to a small extent, altoist Danny House, the musicians are far from household names, but they all fare quite well both in ensembles and during their individual solos. Easily recommended to fans of modern big bands and Stan Kenton.
