Clarinetist Artie Shaw's first orchestra (heard on the opening two numbers in the third volume of this five-LP series) was an admirable but commercially unsuccessful venture which incorporated a string quartet as part of a swing band. When that folded, Shaw returned with a more conventional and louder orchestra, a band that would soon be a major success (perhaps because it was less unusual). This LP contains that orchestra's first dozen recordings and, although it had not caught on yet, one can hear (in Tony Pastor's vocals, Shaw's superb clarinet and the tightness of the ensembles) the beginnings of his "Begin the Beguine" band. Most of this material has not yet been reissued on CD.
