AllMusic Review by

Although quite a departure from his highly evocative singer/songwriter fare, Marc Gartman joined with guitarist Casey Block and a host of collaborators in making an album of uncommon grace and unity with Each New Nostalgic Moment. While Gartman maintains the haunted and vulnerable quality of his previous work, the scale which is presented here -- with the rich crisscrossing electric guitar, cello, keyboards, violin, and clarinet making up the bulk of the gorgeously sculpted aural textures -- almost comes across as one great extended piece. Being comprised mostly of impressionistic instrumental passages, there is an otherworldly, almost ceremonial feel to these tracks, with melodies bending and swerving in unexpected and spontaneous directions. How much of that is due to Gartman's sojourns through Israel and Ukraine is unknown, but the exotic feel of the tracks is pervasive. Pensive but not ponderous, this album unravels at its own deliberate pace, still holding its secrets after repeated listens.
