This video is essentially a filmed version of a live recording from November 5, 1988, which was released by Triloka on CD. Fortunately, this is a very exciting session, with altoist Jackie McLean joined by his son Rene McLean on tenor, soprano, flute, and alto, as well as pianist Hotep Idris Galeta, bassist Nat Reeves, and drummer Carl Allen. The elder McLean plays at his most intense and creative. Most of the selections are group originals, but McLean's searing rendition of Burt Bacharach's "A House Is Not a Home" is one of the many highlights. The music bridges the gap between hard bop and the avant-garde, and is consistently burning with passion.
