AllMusic Review by

The lone sword-and-sorcery score ever written by Alex North, Dragonslayer exhibits little grasp of the concepts and demands of the genre. Penned in the twilight of the legendary Hollywood composer's career, its complex thematic structure and idiosyncratic arrangements simply lack the he-man brawn required to lend some sense of realism to the fantastic worlds portrayed onscreen. Employing instruments spanning from tack piano to log drums to harpsichord, North creates a series of cerebral themes that are far too abstract to properly function within the fantasy genre; rarely does Dragonslayer achieve the visceral intensity or physicality one expects, and while taken on its own terms it is a challenging and ultimately rewarding listening experience, as cinematic accompaniment it fails spectacularly.
