AllMusic Review by

The soundtrack to Kurt Voss' girl rock band comedy Down & Out With the Dolls features a soundtrack filled, appropriately enough, with songs by all-female and female-fronted bands such as the Bangs, the Angoras, and the Paper Dolls, the fictional group around which the movie revolves. Considering that the movie features rockers such as L7's Janis Tanaka, and Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister in cameos, it's not surprising that the album has an authentically gritty, scrappy sound. Tracks such as the Bangs' "He's a Groupie," Fonda's "Round and Square," and "She's Not Your Friend" by Inger Lorre of the long-lost Nymphs provide a fitting backdrop for the Paper Dolls' songs, which are surprisingly good. "One Night Stand" and "Dig" work especially well, balancing garagey sound quality and sweet harmonies in just the right amounts. Not all of Down & Out With the Dolls' songs are winners; Bomber's "Hot as Fuck" and Zoë Poledouris' "Taking It On" fall flat. Still, the album succeeds more often than it fails, and should please fans of the movie as well as fans of double-X chromosome rock.
