Humorously promoted as a relaxation CD, this album from the Schloss Schönbrunn Orchester Vienna is a collection of live recordings of Viennese light music that will actually excite listeners, rather than sooth them. The music of Johann Strauss père et fils, Josef Strauss, Franz von Suppé, and Julius Fucik is traditional fare in Vienna, and no self-respecting local orchestra can avoid playing such familiar pieces as the Fledermaus Overture, the Tritsch-Tratsch Polka, the Artist's Life Waltz, the Light Cavalry Overture, the Champagne Polka, and other classics that regularly rouse audiences to clap and hum along. This chamber orchestra usually performs in the Orangery of the Schloss Schönbrunn, though it also serves as an international ambassador of Viennese music on their many tours. The performances on this disc are led by Mika Eichenholz and Guido Mancusi, and the venues listed include the Göteborg Concert House, the Stockholm Concert House, Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Sibelius Hall in Lahti, the Malmö Concert House, and the Gävle Concert House, showing the group's outreach beyond Austria. Because of the live settings, the sound of the tracks is slightly variable, but the album overall is quite clear and brilliant, and there is little extraneous audience noise.
