A fine trombonist, Darren Kramer has kept his music open to the influence of the type of funky jazz played by the Brecker Brothers, electronics, aspects of fusion and post-bop jazz. On Dko the Darren Kramer Organization, he is not shy to rock out in an R&B groove, play solos that are a little left of center, or use electronics in unusual ways. While the other musicians are fine, they play a background role much of the time behind the leader and do not display a very original personality, but they do not need to in this ensemble-oriented music. Although sounding quite spontaneous, a lot of planning went into this CD and, although it may not satisfy purists of any style, the results are danceable, usually funky and of high quality. Well worth checking out.
