The reverb-soaked production says '80s, but the music is ageless jangle pop. Collecting singles that originally appeared on an assortment of labels, Dig Deep, Brother 1984-1990 summarizes the early years of St. Christopher, a post-C86 group that had spiritual ties to Sarah Records labelmates the Field Mice and Postcard bands such as Orange Juice. The busy drumming on cuts such as "For One So Weak" recalls Icicle Works. With a little more studio gloss, many of these cuts could have become major-label fare by the Weather Prophets and their ilk. "All of a Tremble" and "Who's Next (On Cupid's Hit List)" are shining examples of that '80s jangle that continues to captivate twee poppers, especially in Europe. Few of the group's singles for the esteemed Sarah label are included; the place to find those is the compilation Lost at Sea: The Sarah Recordings.
