Trumpeter Jack Walrath has long been best known for his important association with Charles Mingus. For his debut as a leader, Walrath mixed together a wide variety of different stylists including Mingus's drummer Dannie Richmond, the harmonically advanced Jim McNeely on both piano and organ, the unique guitarist John Scofield and bassist Ray Drummond. Together they perform six of Walrath's quirky originals which, with titles such as "King Duke," "Ray Charles on Mars," "Spliptzill Rohenusi" and "Demons in Pursuit," lets one know that the music will not be all that predictable. Not everything works (the organ sounds dated) but overall this adventurous set is a successful effort.
