AllMusic Review by

One of the last major musical successes to reach the London stage before the outbreak of World War II, The Dancing Years was a triumph for composer Ivor Novello. It was also a total throwback to the kind of stage entertainment that dominated London before the 1930s, essentially an English adaptation of Viennese operetta -- it's beautiful in its Old World manner, filled with lyrical ballads and novelty songs and showcasing the operatic-style singing of Mary Ellis, Dunstant Hart, Olive Gilbert et al, with a spoken word contribution (as well as piano accompaniment) by Novello himself. Reissued on CD by Pearl, Naxos Nostalgia, and other vintage music labels.
