For this record, the Art Metal Quinteto, as the title suggests, brought a promenade encompassing Renaissance and jazz, with some Brazilian music in between. As the quintet uses classical instruments, medieval music was ruled out. The program begins with J.J. Mouret's "Rondeau," a fanfare, and Jeremiah Clarke's well-known "Trumpet Voluntary," both from the early 18th century. Giovanni Gabrieli's "Canzone per Sonare No. 4" is a solemn polyphony with intensive use of the canon and dates back to the 17th century. Johann Sebastian Bach is invoked with his hopeful "My Spirit be Joyful" to close the European part of the recording. Now the group takes listeners to Brazil and Raphael Baptista gives his amusing take on folklore (cantigas de roda, in this case "Ciranda, Cirandinha") in his "Divertimentos Folclóricos," followed by a medley of the wonderful classic Brazilian tangos by Ernesto Nazareth, "Brejeiro" and "Odeon." From the happy celebration, the atmosphere turns to the dramatic feel of the draught of the Northeastern hinterlands with the introduction and interludes of Gilberto Gagliardi's "Cantos Nordestinos," followed by an animated development. Heitor Villa-Lobos' "Choros No. 1," written originally for guitar, provides deeply emotive insight into the choro universe, reminding listeners of a little band in a small country city. "Suíte Para Metais" by Amaral Vieira, on the other hand, delves into a cosmopolitan setting with its anxious "Preâmbulo" and "Tocata." The colorful "Snap" (Harold Emert) brings a wide palette of timbres and rhythms that are expertly conceived, and this is continued on the agile "Introdução e Fanfarra" (Daniel Heavens) and in Shostakovich's "Polka," preparing the introduction of jazz proper, which happens with "Mood Indigo" (Duke Ellington/Albany Bigard/Irving Mills). This is followed by the animated polka "The Easy Winners" (Scott Joplin/Gunther Schuller) and the popular overtones of the humorous "Another Cat: Kraken" (Chris Hazell), which closes the recording.
