AllMusic Review by

To suggest that this surprising debut release has come out of left field may be too literal -- rather from the pastures is more to the point. While Cows Eating in the Rain may be an odd concept, especially when both cows and rain show up in the actual recording, the appealing style of Greg Shultz's keyboard-centered music is undeniable, as thousands of Musical Starstreams fans have shown. Shades of Yanni's compositional style are evident, and the powerful drum tracks and occasional stinging guitars add to the dynamism of the release. At the core of Cows Eating in the Rain is the nearly 15-minute "Understanding to Be Simple," a showcase for his keyboard prowess, and the title cut, which is the album closer and has been aired frequently on Musical Starstreams.
