The strength of Glasgow's club scene has always been the tightly knit group of locals, working closely together regardless of what international forces may come along. Directly below big-daddies Slam and Soma records, Glasgow's DJ Q (aka Paul Flynn) is the city's most recognizable electronic name. Flynn mixed this first CD compilation for the young Under the Counter label. Pure house from beginning to end, Flynn mixes tracks by Eddie Matos, Nostalgia, and Wackdaddies, as well as two of his own cuts. Every record has that uncanny Scottish ability to sound classic without being old, with a melodic touch of keys or strings or vocals to keep the listener locked into the 4/4 beats. But the only real scorcher is Flynn's own "Mototmouth," with its punching sax line that has driven a thousand dancefloors. It is a solid reminder that for every big name DJ, there is a city full of likeminded talent, yet those who break out usually possess that little flare above the rest.
