AllMusic Review by

The Osland Saxophone Quartet, consisting of Jonathan Anderson (alto), Lisa Osland (tenor), Miles Osland (soprano) and Larry Nelson commissioned seven different composers to write extended works for them, all of which are performed in their entirety on this two-CD set. For anyone familiar with jazz saxophone quartets which omit rhythm sections (the World Saxophone Quartet and the 29th Street Saxophone Quartet are probably the best known such groups in jazz), the Osland Saxophone Quartet clearly is a force to be reckoned with, featuring four musicians that are up to the challenges of following the arrangements while incorporating improvisation into each work. The composers include bandleaders Gordon Goodwin, Bob Mintzer and Walt Weiskopf, plus names that may not be as familiar, like Mike Mower, Anders Åstrand and Hudson Nogeira. Not all of the pieces are for quartet alone, but be assured that there is a lot of variety and the performances never become predictable. True saxophone enthusiasts, particularly anyone who plays any of the instruments heard in this collection, will be delighted with this release.
