Cliff Jackson & His Crazy Kats Review

by Scott Yanow

Pianist Cliff Jackson's Krazy Cats (called "Crazy Cats" on this LP) were a particularly heated Harlem jazz band. They recorded two explosive titles ("Horse Feathers" and "Torrid Rhythm") on January 30, 1930, and returned to the studios a month later to perform ten other numbers, including "The Terror" (heard here in two versions). The ten-piece group featured trumpeter Henry Goodwin, Rudy Powell on clarinet and alto, the leader/pianist, and the forceful tenor of Horace Langhorn, and is well worth discovering by vintage jazz fans.
