AllMusic Review by

Conceived of by Free Spirit Gordon Clay for the breathwork portion of his Healing the Father Wound workshops, Clear Energy is an exhilarating tape of cross-cultural rhythms designed to support "the celebration of life in every moment." The two other Free Spirits are renowned African percussionist Frank Ekeh, an alumnus of Olatunji's Drums of Passion, and Jim Berenholtz, a flute and percussion player best known as co-founder of the neo-shamanic group Xochimoki. Clear Energy consists of two 15-minute tracks. "Morning Ritual" is designed to gear you up for the day ahead, with its insistent bass drum, rolling hand drum rhythms, owlish ocarina and breathy panpipes, repeatedly building up then falling back to charge up the listener (or dancer). "Evening Ritual," which is intended to banish the stresses of the day and leave you alert for enjoying the evening, features the odd braying of the Khaen, a Thai bamboo mouth organ, over a host of percussion instruments. Rainstick, turtle shell drum, llama toe nail rattles, log drums, djun djun, and onibeji bongos are just some of the instruments that Free Spirits use to help the listener free up the body and clear the mind.
