Finally, there's a pairing of King Sunny Ade reissues that makes chronological sense. Instead of bouncing all over the years, these two both come from 1988. Musically, it wasn't the best period for Ade, who seemed to be in a fallow time then. And so, unfortunately, much of the material here sounds pedestrian and uninspired rather than soaring, as his work earlier (and later) did. Some tracks were reworked in the '90s, to much better effect. Two albums for the price of one might be good value -- but it's hard to get excited about this particular set.
