Time Life enters the country compilation sweepstakes with a somewhat slim yet still solid mix of late-'60s hits and misses. Spanning most of the big country labels, the 15-track set ranges from outlaw sides (Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and Waylon Jennings' "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line") to a few slices of Nashville sound gloss (Eddy Arnold's "Make the World Go Away"). In between, there are plenty of other chart-toppers by Glen Campbell ("Wichita Lineman"), Jeannie C. Riley ("Harper Valley P.T.A."), Loretta Lynn ("Don't Come Home a Drinkin' [With Lovin' on Your Mind]"), and Roger Miller ("King of the Road"). And Elvis even makes an appearance, with his ethereal gospel stunner "Crying in the Chapel." Taken in tandem with the more bulky and focused Columbia Country Classics: The Nashville Sound, this varied sampler makes for a heady, late-night tavern soundtrack.
