Direct Source's Classic 50s Hits is a ten-song collection of pop and rock hits of the '50s by crooners like Perry Como, Pat Boone, and rockers like Fats Domino and Lloyd Price. The set looks good on paper but you must heed the warning on the back cover of the disc, which says in surprisingly bold print "updated versions of original hits." So many collections like this fail to mention that salient fact, it is nice to see one make it obvious before you spend your cash. The updated versions are uniformly awful, sounding wooden and bland. The odd thing is that a few of the songs, like Rosemary Clooney's "You Make Me Feel So Young," Louis Prima's "Angelina," and Peggy Lee's "My Old Flame" are actually the original hit versions. Strange. In order to save yourself having to deal with this mess at all, just skip the whole darn thing.
