The first volume features the recordings of Zohra Bai, one of the vocalists whose work a young Ravi Shankar admired. An accomplished and versatile singer in a number of styles including khyal, thumri, dadra and kajri, she was also a poetess. Disc two focuses on the work of the tawaif or courtesan-singer Janki Bai (the same singer featured on Rounder's Vintage Music from India). Many tawaifs were renowned singers and one can believe it from the preserved output of Janki Bai. Sublime moments galore.
