With a bit of a ska groove to their music (and downright Latin-reggae on "Mentiria"), Go Lem System mine a little bit of the same seam as Manu Chao, but without the lightness of touch that characterizes his music. There's definitely a touch more soul in the sound, as they demonstrate on "Entra Sin Golpear," where the horns bring a touch of Memphis, and the wah-wah guitar has faint echoes of "Shaft." The real problem with this album is that, although everything is well played, no real personality shines through. It's fairly anonymous music, and when the album's done, you're hard pressed to remember a single song. There are many who do this a lot better -- there's not even a sense of real energy or sweat on fast pieces like "Le Fou = Tou." This probably works better live than on disc, where the ingredients never rise into a great cake.
