Brazilian music lovers rejoice! Malandro Records is dedicated to releasing the very best in Brazilian jazz that has its roots in the samba, bossa nova, choro, and Brazilian popular music traditions -- music grown from the past but very much of the modern day. This sampler features tracks from 17 label artists, including Nilson Matta and Hnedrik Meurkens (a bass-harmonica duo doing the classic Jobim tune "Sou Mais o Samba"), drummer Tutty Moreno (a drummer who captures the old-meets-new flavor the label is aiming for on "Samba Novo"), Ladston do Nascimento (a top vocalist), and Rabo de Lagartixa, who engages in Brazilian ragtime. Each CD on this label features the vintage photographs of Genevieve Naylor, who lived in Brazil for three years in the 1940s. The Naylor archive is considered to be the only known archive of photo reportage taken of Brazilian life and culture during this time -- and these photos add a nostalgic flavor to the packaging, again part of the fusing of past and present. Accept no substitutes -- this is the real Brazilian deal.
