The box set BOSSA NOVA JAZZ celebrates not only the global resurgence of bossa nova's popularity (and its influence on jazz) but also the role of Verve Records in the history of American bossa nova. For the uninitiated, bossa nova is the Brazilian synthesis of native samba rhythms-melodies and the cooler side of American jazz. In the 1960s, the roster of Verve Records had the cream of Brazilian bossa nova artists and the American performers who claimed the idiom for themselves: Luiz Bonfa, Astrud & João Gilberto, Walter Wanderley, Charlie Byrd and, not least, Stan Getz. While the first wave of American bossa nova peaked in the mid-'60s, it never really went away. When the new wave of bossa nova performers emerged in the '90s and beyond, Verve was there to record them. While there may never be an "ideal" collection displaying how bossa nova and jazz influenced each other, BOSSA NOVA JAZZ comes close.
