Although the marketplace has been flooded for some time now by an overabundance of Blue Öyster Cult compilations (Workshop of the Telescopes, The Essential Blue Oyster Cult, etc.), further similar releases appear without fail each year. One of the better ones to emerge (from a track list and price standpoint) is the 2000 double-disc set, Blue Öyster Cult [Compilation]. There are no surprises -- just the best-known versions of all of BÖC's rock radio classics from the early '70s through the early '80s (their prime period), as well as a smattering of early album cuts. As evidenced here, the group had no problem penning hard rockers that contained enough melody to cross over to the pop audience ("(Don't Fear) the Reaper," "Godzilla," and especially one of the early '80s great rock singles, "Burnin' for You"). While bands like Black Sabbath seem to get the lion's share of laying out the blueprint for riff-heavy rock, BÖC was definitely a contributor as well, as evidenced by such early tracks as "The Red and the Black," "Dominance and Submission," "7 Screaming Diz Busters," and "Cities on Flame with Rock n' Roll." Blue Öyster Cult [Compilation] is a fine and affordable introduction to these heavy metal greats.
