While Waldorf and their "King-Sized" records generally are of dubious (i.e., budget) quality, in Kamuela they have a Hawaiian group of significant talent. Two steel guitars, Spanish guitar, ukulele, bass, drums, and flute/clarinet provide sufficiently authentic (or exotic) backing. Honolulu-born Kamuela plays steel and sings with a marvelous quality that shows his associations with Lani McIntyre and Ray Kinney. In short, it is a combination of nearly ideal instrumentation, good sound, sincere, clear, and passionate singing, and an excellent choice of unusual and humorous songs. Blue Hawaii features four Harry Owens tunes, including "Hula Lolo," and Sol K. Bright's "Sophisticated Hula."
