An intriguing album of gamelan based largely on the gamelan jegog orchestra, one made of giant bamboo. Rather than the usual shining, shimmering sound of a proper gong kebyar or semar pegulingan gamelan ensemble, the jegog provides a rapid-fire array of notes, forming a texture of sound from the many droplets of noise in the orchestra. The compositions are somewhat similar to other gamelan forms, though frenetic or frantic in their forward drive. Also included on the album are examples of gamelan semar pegulingan in its full glory, which is heard more often on other Balinese albums, and a bit of music for the wayang kulit shadow plays, heard somewhat more than gamelan jegog, but lacking somewhat without the shadow play itself accompanying the intricate music. Many, many albums of gamelan are available on the market, and this one is of an average quality musically. Add some points for taking a jegog focus nonetheless.
