AllMusic Review by

BETTER BEWARE is a compilation of recordings from Esther Phillips's early career when she was known as 'Little Esther.' The singer had already achieved a considerable amount of success in 1951 with a string of hits recorded for the Savoy label, but she soon moved to Federal Records, where she stayed until 1953. BETTER BEWARE documents Little Esther's tenure at Federal, so while it's missing Savoy hits like "Double Crossin' Blues" it contains plenty of the bright, soulful R&B she built her name on. The charms of Phillips's distinctively girlish voice are evident on "Looking for a Man," "I'm a Bad, Bad Girl," and "The Storm," among others.
