This is a particularly interesting and unusual Ben Pollack LP, for the 16 selections are all alternate takes. Pollack led important big bands from 1926-34, and among his key sidemen on these 16 selections are clarinetist Benny Goodman (who took his first recorded solos on the Dec. 17, 1926 session), trombonist Glenn Miller, cornetist Jimmy McPartland, trumpeter Charlie Teagarden, tenorman Eddie Miler and trombonist Jack Teagarden. Not all of the selections are classics (since Pollack does take vocals on half of the numbers), but there are memorable versions of "He's the Last Word," "Wang Wang Blues" and "Beale Street Blues" (which features Jack Teagarden's vocal). Worth searching for by 1920s collectors.
