AllMusic Review by

This 21-track salute to Benny Goodman appeared in 1993 as part of Pearl's Cream Series. Focusing upon his best records dating from the years 1935-1938, this excellent collection finds Goodman at the helm of his trio, quartet, and orchestra. Featured artists are Lionel Hampton, Jimmy Rushing, Helen Ward. and Ella Fitzgerald. In addition to "Stompin' at the Savoy" and a nearly nine-minute version of "Sing, Sing, Sing," this handy little sampler includes a zippy adaptation of Fats Waller's "Handful of Keys." Benny Goodman was a vital force both in the popularization of swing and the desegregation of the entertainment industry, which soon led to the desegregation of the population throughout the United States of America, an objective which has yet to be fully realized.
