Big Sid Catlett, one of the finest of all swing drummers, was only in Benny Goodman's orchestra for a few months and cut just a handful of studio recordings. Fortunately this double LP allows us to hear Catlett with BG on several radio broadcasts, playing colorfully behind the ensembles. The 1941 Goodman big band, in addition to the leader/clarinetist, gave solo space to trumpeter Jimmy Maxwell, Vido Musso's tenor, trombonist Lou McGarity and pianist Mel Powell; the result is an orchestra that could hold its own against BG's best.
