The British television series Being Human (which is broadcast in the U.S. on the BBC America channel and is not to be confused with an American version with the same name on the Syfy network) concerns three Bristol roommates who just happen to be a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost. This soundtrack album of composer Richard Wells' music for the show, 45 minutes culled from the five hours of cues he wrote for the first two seasons, is, perhaps not surprisingly, quite varied. The series is, to begin with, described as a comedy-drama, which expands the kinds of moods required for the accompanying music. Wells, who, according to writer/executive producer Toby Whithouse, declined to look at scripts in advance and composed his music after watching the episodes themselves, has not restricted himself to a specific overall style. Instead, he seems to have responded to the needs of particular episodes and scenes. So, his music can have traditional orchestral themes, as in the cue "A Second Chance," or delicate, contemplative keyboard passages (played by the composer) in "Resurrection" and "Someone Else." But Wells also clearly needs to underscore suspenseful action and even horror scenes, and he does so by bringing in industrial noise rock with searing sound effects in "Box Tunnel Massacre," "It's Coming," "Beautiful Chaos," and especially the shocking "Annie's Door." Contrast these, however, with the playful clarinet theme of "Leaving" and the delicate guitar harmonics of "Lucky," and the result is a collection suggesting a show that can be terrifying one moment and lighthearted the next.
