Battle of Tenor Saxes Review

by Scott Yanow

There is no actual tenor battle on this valuable IAJRC LP but a dozen different bop-based tenors are heard from on 16 studio selections, some of which were formerly rare. On side one (which is titled "The Big Sound") Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Gene Ammons, Ike Quebec, Paul Gonsavles and Illinois Jacquet (Quebec and Jacquet twice) are heard from while side two ("The Cool School") features Lester Young, Dexter Gordon, Allen Eager, Warne Marsh, James Moody and Wardell Gray; Young and Marsh pop up twice. Although this is very much a sampler (which unfortunately leaves out Teddy Edwards, Stan Getz and Zoot Sims), all of the diverse tenors play quite well; it is recommended to fans of the bop era.
