Bailables presents some of Blanco's best work, which is saying something, although half the tracks are just great, not astonishing. "Cumbia con Arpa" (Harp Cumbia) is a pulsing, compelling, and yes, very danceable track. It also appears on a Discos Fuentes compilation, also called Bailables (Medellin, Columbia). Other tracks which more than live up to the title include "Domingo por la Mañana" (fanstastic!), "La Trasandina," "La Cigarrona," and "Por la Carretera." All of these and two others are Hugo Blanco originals. Among the covers, of note is a wonderful version of the classic calypso "Shame and Scandal in the Family" ("Escandalo en la Familia"). Bailables proves Blanco's group to be not only the hippest harp-led combo, but also the equal of the best Latin groups (pachanga, boogaloo, etc.) of the era.
