This should have been a more memorable release. Trumpeter Jack Walrath, one of the top surviving alumni of Charles Mingus' groups, teams up with three talented Europeans. The blend of Walrath with tenor saxophonist Jesus Santandreu is particularly attractive. The problem is that the seven group originals lack any strong melodies or intriguing chord changes. Some of the pieces are based on repetitive bass patterns and "Novissims" is centered around the alternation of two notes. Walrath, Santadreu, bassist Zé Eduardo, and drummer Marc Miralta do the most they can with these pieces (which also include Charles Mingus' "Sue's Changes"), but the end results are a slight disappointment despite some excellent playing.
