If there was ever any doubt that the Hoodoo Gurus were one of the best unknown rock acts of the 1980s and early '90s, then this compilation should clear that up. At a whopping 40 tracks -- culled from every Gurus album and including all the hits -- Ampology is an energetic, comprehensive portrait of this Australian pop/rock outfit. Though the Hoodoo Gurus certainly could rock -- and they rocked hard, at that -- they also had some excellently catchy pop songs, and that is what truly distinguished their career. While some albums were a bit inconsistent, Ampology collects all the singles, a handful of album tracks, and a healthy pile of B-sides, non-album singles, and rarities into a release perfect both for devoted fans and for newcomers to the band. The scope of the material here is incredible, from the post-British invasion college rock of the early singles to the showstopping hard rock of the later singles, Ampology is a portrait of a cult rock & roll act at their best. Songs like "Bittersweet," "I Want You Back," "Like Wow-Wipeout," and "Another World" should be a part of any self-respecting rock or pop fan's collection, and as Ampology retails for about the same as the earlier and less complete Electric Soup, this is definitely the way to go.
