Baltimore’s Eriq J’Mar lays down straightforward, danceable R&B that comes across like a simplified, electronica-oriented version of early 1980s pop. J’Mar doesn’t have the sophistication or pop smarts of, say, Michael Jackson, but ALWAYS… ERIQ, the young singer’s debut, is full of melodic, likeable soul-pop that alternates between sweeping balladry (“Baby Come with Me”) and dance floor-filling jams (“My Party”). J’Mar’s high tenor is flexible and sweet, and while his tunes can get a bit syrupy (“Daddy I Miss U”), his debut announces the arrival of a promising young talent.
