Edging out Jabberjaw's Girlfriend as Perlon's most thrilling 12" of 2003 was Alpine Rocket, a collaboration between the Switzerland-based Luciano and Vancouver's Mathew Jonson. A-side "Alpine Rocket" is ten minutes of lusciously rippling rhythms, with a wide variety of percussive effects and keyboard patterns, along with a husky vocal line from Cassy Britton, cunningly layered on top. The lone track on the B-side, "Mr. Chancleta," is deserving of almost the same amount of attention; beginning with a similar amount of levity, all the rhythmic squelches and squirts are eventually thickened by a subtle but deeply resonant bassline. Like "Alpine Rocket," it seems all too brief despite its length. Those who continue to argue that innovation is a dead issue in house music ought to be forced to hear this. Both producers are on top of their game.
