AllMusic Review by

David Essex's third and fifth albums are pretty powerful combination, and a diverse one as well. All the Fun of the Fair features some of Jeff Wayne's best production work, combining massively effective overdubbing with a vivid live sound, as well as featuring some of Essex's most effective singing, possibly owing to his identification with the concept behind the album and the brilliant title song, which recalled his summers working at fun-fairs. Gold & Ivory was produced by Essex himself and features entirely different sonic textures, not as richly defined but more smoothly integrated on each song. The digital remastering is state of the art, and the annotation is informative and enlightening concerning the declining years of Essex's pop success.
