AllMusic Review by

Akom: Art of Possession is part of the exceptional line of African recordings on Village Pulse, this album features a trance ceremony from Ghana's Akan people. It's a nice ethnomusicological recording in that it includes the full sound culture, as it were. The shouts, the call-and-response singing, the chants are all recorded. The random noises of a collection of people are recorded. And the hallmark of the Village Pulse releases, a massive amount of drumming, has also been recorded. Here, we hear the basic Akan drum ensemble, with three primary drums and a collection of supporting drums and percussion instruments. Especially notable in the recordings are a number of donno drums, a Ghanaian variety of the talking drum. A very nice piece of work for the collection of any West African music enthusiast.
