Afterglow is beautiful space-jazz with a slight Oriental flavor stemming from the bamboo flute and hand-percussion. Winfield plays flutes and soprano sax, and is joined by others on piano, synthesizer, bass and congas. There are short interludes throughout which run around eight minutes each, giving the musicians just enough time to establish the theme, stretch out a bit, and return the pieces to a resting place that encompasses a relaxing mood of musical energies. Sections of the title piece pick up the pace nicely, but for the most part this is afternoon music for times of contemplation that are thoughtful but not too serious.
