Pile of Rock: Live is a direct DVD audio transfer of the live CD, with 5.1 surround sound audio that pretty much puts you on-stage, in the middle of the band, with Dave Edmunds and company. The mix strikes a careful balance between the individual instrument "voices" and the unified band sound, which should please the more musicianly, analytical fans as well as DVD audio buffs who just want a great rock & roll concert to enjoy. And this is very much that -- a smooth, hard-rocking energetic Edmunds performance that encompasses lots of career highlights and some great music played beautifully and sung even better; "Queen of Hearts," "I Knew the Bride," "I Hear You Knocking," and "Sabre Dance" are just a few of the high points here. Even the simple Dolby digital playback is impressive. Good as the accompanying CD is, the wider sound range on this disc makes it preferable for anyone set up with either a DVD video or DVD audio player. If there is a flaw in this version of the album, it's the lack of full credits or annotation, but that doesn't detract one bit from the music.
