This collection is somewhat misleadingly titled: these are not the original recordings from Doug Clark & the Hot Nuts' classic '60s party albums on the Gross label, but more recent re-recordings with somewhat different material. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as Clark and his band had remained on the Southern fraternity circuit nonstop from the early '60s until Clark's death in 2002 -- Clark's son took over at that point and kept on playing, and never fundamentally changed the group's R&B show-band style. There are no inappropriate attempts to stay current or hip on these recordings, and the arrangements are straight-up big-band R&B with horns. It's not a bad introduction, then, for the neophyte, but those expecting a CD reissue of the classic early-'60s albums will be disappointed.
