"Recorded live at the '21' Lounge of the Mark 2100" (Motel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida), Don Hayes is your classic lounge act. With thick black glasses, thickly pomaded cowlick, and the endearing smile of a Dick Schory, this man knows what it means to entertain. And that knowledge, for better or for worse, seems limited mostly to unfunny, occasionally pathetic bits of anecdotal humor spoken amidst an album-long medley. But he is so congenial, and the jacket photos so irresistible, one cannot help but, as the liners instruct, "relax and let Don Hayes' 'therapy' take over." Okay, one can help it, one really must help it, but even if it is not so "Fun," this piano-bar album certainly is "Special."
